Gondar was the political center of Ethiopia for some two hundred years. The founder was Emperor Fasiledes in 1640s who built a great Castle which stands to this day in a grassy compound surrounded by other fortresses and Castles of later constructions
Gondar enjoyed a privileged position not only for it’s natural resources , forests and water but also for its strategic location at the crossroads of flourishing trade routes.
Other notable constructions with the finest example of Gondar art is the church of Debre Berhan Sellasie “ mount light of the holy trinity”. The atmosphere is byzantine and the side walls are completely covered with paintings showing scenes from the life of Jesus.
